Being able to choose which family to work with

They got a puppy halfway through and it was CRAZY, so I wish they would have told me they were considering getting a dog from the beginning

What I liked

I love that I’m able to negotiate my own rate and employer, and that the hours are so flexible. The pay is great as well for something I honestly enjoy doing. Great opportunity to gain experience working with children and families.

What I wish was different

The Care.com platform has a free option but isn’t completely free if you want a great profile. It does require patience and you do have to be your own advocate. Working with a nanny agency helps with finding a good family, but they can take a big cut.

Advice

If you like working with children, part-time and full-time nanny jobs pay well and can be flexible around school if you find the right one (ex: 2x a week or before and after school care). Starting out, try using an agency if you’re not comfortable finding families on your own.

What I liked

I loved living down the shore and being to get away from home for the summer.

What I wish was different

Nothing I enjoyed every minute of it.

Advice

It is an amazing opportunity to get away from home and live elsewhere while working and living at the beach.

January 2019 • Murrieta, CA

What I liked

I loved being able to check out the families in advance to be able to see what was a good fit for me before getting too involved with the kids. I liked the filters on care.com that allow you to sort jobs based on your hours available, location, and desired pay.

What I wish was different

I've had a lot of experience nannying but because my previous employers did not submit something it was not able to be shown on my profile although I requested it to be.

Advice

Every family is different so ask when things they look for in a nanny. Some are looking for more a maid, some look for entertainment for their kids, and some look for someone who can push their children to become better individuals. Strive to excel in all these areas that are expected.

What I liked

I enjoyed learning from and teaching 4 kids. We all took something educational from it. My favorite was feedback from their teachers regarding their improvement of behavior and education as a result of my time with them.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have incorporated more arts and crafts, alongside the reading and STEM we did. We will definitely work on more arts and crafts this summer.

Advice

Use research to your advantage! Look up fun activities, schedules, tips, advice on the internet. Don't be afraid to fail sometimes, all children learn, behave, and interact differently. Also don't be shy from communicating with your boss, friends, and even staff at CMU. They give great advice.

Nanny

June - August 2020 • Saco, ME

What I liked

the parents would pay me to take the little girl to do fun stuff so it was a very fun and rewarding job to know that the girl was enjoying our activities and I had a very sisterly bond with the little girl which I feel was very good for her because she was an only child.

What I wish was different

I wish my hours had been different because I was working full time from morning to sundown and I honestly started to get a bit depressed because I had no time to enjoy my summer or hang out with friends and I saw all of the fun things that my friends were doing and I felt very left out.

Advice

If they are trying to be a nanny for a summer job I would say to really consider your work-life balance when applying for a job because you still want time to enjoy your summer too.
