Generation Teach

Engineering Teaching Fellow

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I loved working with the children and seeing their growth over the summer. Also, it was even more incredible how much I grew as a person, too. I learned about my leadership styles, how to work with a department and challenged myself to teach a STEM subject as a female.

What I wish was different

There are three schools in Denver that provided the Generation Teach program, which requires a lot of leadership (3 principles, and an entire administrative board and coaches for each department) but at times there was an absence of strong leadership because of the (year round) teachers having teaching commitments for their full time jobs.

Advice

I would advise people to be openminded. Developing a growth mindset will push you to develop incredible leadership skills and learn a lot.

What I liked

I liked the mission, organization, and effectiveness of the internship. If anyone is considering a career in education, it's an invaluable and far-reaching internship.

What I wish was different

The compensation would have been very difficult if I was not supplemented with a Wesleyan grant. Also, the leadership was sometimes unclear or confusing, and the quality of coaches varied.

Advice

Be ready to work hard, but in the best way possible. Don't be afraid to speak up or share ideas. Think about the kids as people.
