I liked my experience at Goldman Sachs this summer because I got to learn a great deal about the financial services industry.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had the opportunity to be in person for the internship but I am still grateful for the experience.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to constantly network with those around you. By communicating with fellow interns and those who work at the firm you will have a better understanding of the culture and how you can positively contribute.

What I liked

My internship was originally supposed to be an in-person, nine week internship, however due to COVID-19 it became fully remote and shortened to five weeks. Goldman Sachs did a wonderful job giving the interns the best experience possible without being in office. The projects I was given to work on really gave me a sense of what I would be doing if I were a full-time employee. And I loved all of the people I worked with! They even gave us presentations about life in SLC is like to help give us a feel for the area.

What I wish was different

Honestly, there is not much I wish was different. Because it was virtual, I did not really have any set expectations going into the experience. Of course I wish it had been an in-person experience, but it was the right choice to make it virtual.

Advice

Definitely take the feedback you are given and use it! I had weekly reviews with my manager where I was given feedback on things that I was doing well on and a few things I needed to improve on. This was super helpful because then I was able to improve and become a better intern.

Be yourself. It is emphasized throughout the internship, but it is absolutely true. You are your best asset and when you are fully yourself you are the best version for your team.

I wish I’d been able to use my interest and expertise in statistics more.

Advice

Goldman is a great company. It’s very likely that they have teams and spots you’ll enjoy. It’s a longer week there than most places. It’s a bit of a competitive environment, but a solid group with great starting pay.

What I liked

Incredible people. Huge learning experience because assignments were more ambiguous, but everyone was so gracious about answering any and as many questions as you had. I could also learn about anyone else’s role and try it out. Mentoring program is out of this world. Seminars, social events, and community service opportunities were also great!

What I wish was different

Nothing honestly. It exceeded my expectations!

Be 100% yourself and always allow your intellectual curiosity to guide you.

I throughly enjoyed the culture at Goldman Sachs and the talent pool I was able to surround myself with. I enjoyed the ability to leverage a wide variety of skills on a daily basis.

A 12 week instead of a 10 week internship.

Don’t be afraid to talk to management about tasks that you enjoy doing and tasks that you feel like you can improve. They are very open to your ideas.

What I liked

I really enjoyed learning from a wide range of professionals in such a dynamic environment. I gained a lot of new technical skills while also expanding my own personal network and knowledge of financial markets.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more thorough training at the beginning of the internship. I also wish that the intern project for the summer had been more clearly outlined from the start.

Advice

The summer analyst position is a great opportunity to not only gain a greater understanding of what your specific team does, but also of other Goldman Sachs teams and functions. I really enjoyed getting to know people on other teams and in different divisions to learn more about how the firm functions as a whole. Through talking with people in different divisions throughout the summer, I was able to gain a better understanding of what division I felt would be the best fit for me for a full-time position as well.
