Merchandise Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Menomonee Falls, WI

What I liked

It was very structured, and you learn a lot. There are 4 main projects throughout the internship that really allow interns to get creative with the data. Additionally, interns were given the opportunity to attend a C suite speaker series, competitively shop, and shadow other departments. I very much enjoyed the internship.

What I wish was different

I wish it would've been a little bit more fast paced. It was good for me since it was my first internship experience, but some other interns were bored at times.

Advice

Take advantage of all the accomplished and intelligent people you are surrounded by in the corporate office. You can learn so much just by shadowing their daily tasks.

Digital Media Analytics Intern

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The people were wonderful. Everyone wanted you to succeed, and they were happy to take time out of their days to help you do just that. I also learned a significant amount about Tableau and Google Analytics, and also honed my skills in Excel.

What I wish was different

There was a couple months-long gap between the initial offer acceptance email in November and the next communication between Kohl's and the interns. It would have been helpful to have one or two intermediate emails to say "you still have the position and we're happy to have to coming to Kohl's in the upcoming summer".

Advice

If you want to get the most out of your internship, be curious and be prepared to search out answers. My direct coworkers didn't always have the expertise I needed during projects and would direct me to other people within the company. By taking initiative and following up on those leads, I learned so much more from my internship than I would have otherwise.

I really enjoyed learning about a corporate environment. I enjoyed the people I worked with, and I liked learning more about the real world application of what I am learning in school.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more prepared for the corporate environment before I got there.

I would suggest to any design major at Kent State to take the technical design class- it was the class most applicable to a corporate job that I have taken at Kent.

Marketing Strategy Intern

June - August 2018 • Menomonee Falls, WI

What I liked

I loved the culture at Kohl's over the summer. Everyone was extemely welcoming, helpful, and alway willing to answer my questions. I enjoyed how much hands-on experience I got at Kohl's. I didn't spend the summer working on mindless tasks or grabbing coffee. I spent most of summer implementing company wide marketing strategies that had a real business impact. I was given tasks that help strengthen my marketing skills and provided me with a better understanding of the retail industry. I was also given the opportunity to explore different areas of the company. It was interesting to see how marketing interacted with merchandising, finance, real estate, and product development. Additionally, I felt like I made a ton of really great connections over the summer.

What I wish was different

Kohl's has a very quick turnaround for extending offers for full-time to their interns. I was both excited and nervous that I got an offer two weeks after the internship was over. The only hard part about that was having to make a decision within a week of recieving the offer. For some, it was great to have a full-time job lined up after graduation. For others, it was hard to accept knowing they might want to look elsewhere.

Advice

If you are interested in retail and marketing I would highly recommend this internship. Not only is it a great company but they are also great to their interns. They offered us free housing and transportation to and from work over the summer, which was a really big perk!

Kohls Executive Management Supervisor Intern

June - August 2018 • San Bernardino, CA

What I liked

I was treated and exposed to the same things as the Full-Time Supervisors. I was accepted by the entire building and felt like a part of the team from week 1 through week 10.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more time to dive into the more technical requirements that Supervisors have. I also wish I could have worked overtime on some days to leave my partners with more efficient nad thorough hand-offs.

Advice

Always take advantage of an opportunity to pick the brain of people in the field that you hope to enter. This internship allowed us to meet one on one with everyone in the warehouse. I learned a lot about management, career paths, and life from the various people I was able to speak with.

What I liked

I enjoy learning new things every day and learning to assist customers in the most efficient and effective ways possible. I enjoy building relationships with my coworkers and volunteering in nonprofit events through Kohls' Associates in Action program.

What I wish was different

I wish my schedule could be more consistent, as it can differ greatly week-to-week.

Advice

The current work can be stressful at times, just keep in mind that the skills and experience that you are gaining is extremely valuable to your future endeavors.

Apparel Design Intern

June - August 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The job environment is extremely positive and welcoming. My team helped me to learn all of the skills I would need to enter into an assistant designer role at most corporate companies. Kohl's also took my design interests into consideration when placing me and the team I was placed on was the best fit for me.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply to positions, I applied through the Kohl's career website on a whim. Be confident when you're interviewing, but also be realistic. They want to hire people that are excited to work, and if you are fake in your interview you probably won't enjoy faking it for the whole ten week internship if you happen to get the position.
