What I liked
I LOVED answering questions and I REALLY LOVED showing rooms, especially in the Woods. I enjoyed discussing residence life with prospective students and sharing in their excitement for college living. I also really like how supportive the staff was.
What I wish was different
I wish that the training would have been little more hands-on, but there isn't really anything specific that I would change, I really enjoyed the whole experience.
Advice
Always, always, always be yourself!! That's the key to everything regarding the experience.

College of Arts and Sciences Student Office Assistant

What I liked
The office is a wonderful space that deals with many different departments and students. Until I started working here I did not know how interconnected all the departments at NMU were, and I definitely wouldn't have learned anything about university administration! The work is surprisingly engaging, and I love talking to people so I loved that aspect of the job.
What I wish was different
You usually end up helping people with directions. Learning the building and how to navigate Weston/West Science is a must. DO NOT APPLY FOR THIS JOB IF YOU CANNOT KEEP YOURSELF BUSY AND ON TASK. There is a lot of downtime (especially in the summer) so bring a book.
Advice
I appreciate secretaries and other office work a lot more now. I sent a fax for the first time in my life, and all the secrets of copiers were able to be uncovered.

Everyone who works here is very nice. Supervisors are very helpful whenever you have questions. Flexible hours and time off. Allowed to do homework, as long as it doesn't distract from your work duties.

Bring homework during the school year. Take notes about what you learn at this job. There's a lot of things to learn and when registration periods hit, you're going to want to know as much as you can.
