RSM US LLP

Audit Intern

January - August 2020 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I liked the ability to experience what a busy season within a public accounting firm would look like and how it would work. I got to learn how to go through an audit process with several different accounts for different clients.

What I wish was different

I honestly don’t wish to change any of experiences I encountered.

Advice

I’d say go in ready to learn as much as possible and to not be hesitant to ask questions. All the employees are very helpful and would rather you ask them questions.

What I liked

I loved the fact that even though the internship program had changed from what it originally would have been, the company tried it's best to instill the culture onto the interns.

Tax Intern

January - April 2020 • Waterloo, IA

What I liked

Being at RSM, I really enjoyed the challenge that preparing tax returns brought me. Never preparing tax returns before, I got to get my hands on 30+ tax returns for both businesses and individuals. Being at a smaller office, it gave me the freedom to prepare multiple tax returns a week, and I enjoyed this. The tax managers and associates did a great job at answering any questions I had, and made the internship great all around. I also really enjoyed the office environment, and all of my coworkers.

What I wish was different

I enjoyed every aspect of my internship so I would not of changed anything!

Advice

I will give two pieces of advice because these are very important. Do not be afraid to ask questions and self review your work every time.

Assurance intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I loved the office and people I worked for. The work environment and culture at RSM is uplifting for an accounting firm. My fellow internship friends were amazing and we all hung out out of work a lot. I loved the work environment and how the employees treated us.

What I wish was different

I can’t wish much more. I was on one client for 3 weeks I do wish I was on a couple for weeks at a time. My internship experience I was on 3 different clients which was nice.

Advice

My piece of advice is to go in with an open attitude and just be very willing to learn. Everyone wants you to succeed!

Tax/Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Elkhart, IN

What I liked

I liked that they gave me an opportunity to do both audit and tax in order to know which area of public accounting was best suited for me. The people there were also really nice and good to work with.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been in a cubicle that was a little more included in the area that the tax people were in. Otherwise, my only comment would be that it was difficult to get into the tax work because of the time of the year, but there is nothing you can do about that.

Advice

This is a great opportunity for people to get their foot in the door in a public accounting environment. The industry is in high demand right now and my only advice would be to give it a shot and to be able to network well while working.

Tax Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed all of the people that worked at the firm. They truly cared about educating myself, as well as the other interns. There was a sense of community at the firm and we participated in philanthropic activities throughout the summer to give back to our communities. It was very nice to work at a firm that cares about employees and you are not just viewed as another number in their system, rather an individual.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I had a great experience working at the firm.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and eagerness to learn. The more you get involved in terms of asking for work and networking with other people the more success you will have.

What I liked

The team I worked on was so awesome! Always willing to answer any silly question I had and was good about keeping me involved and treating me to lunch.

What I wish was different

I wish we weren’t capped at 32 hours during the summer.

Advice

Keep an open mind and be willing to learn and do whatever tasks the team has for you. Be a sponge and soak up all the information around you!

Audit Intern

January - April 2019 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I most liked how welcoming everyone in my department and the entire company was. They all know that you're an intern and it is a steep learning curve to come on in January and start working with clients immediately. My co-workers all encouraged me to ask questions because that's the best way to learn and it's better to ask questions than to guess and get it wrong.

What I wish was different

I wish we could've shadowed or talked to someone in a different industry during my internship. I was in the health care industry but it would've been helpful to learn more about auditing the commercial team. This would make me more sure about my decision to stay on the healthcare team.

Loved the people and the environment. Everyone there is extremely helpful and down to earth. The work itself is fun and engaging as well.
