What I liked

Liked the number of hours I could get and the overtime I was allowed.

What I wish was different

It was a short term position simply to earn money for school. I really can't ask for much more than a job, hours, and a pay check which is what they gave.

Advice

It is a great experience for high school and college kids trying to earn some money over the summer.

Corporate Strategy Intern

What I liked

Amazing people! Amazing company! Steelcase is such an innovative and forward thinking company and I cannot speak higher of the company and the people that work there. Driven by a mission, every employee has a clear vision of how the company helps improve performance and changes the way companies work. Being on the Corporate Strategy team, I was given responsibilties the same as a full-time employee and I felt that I could contribute in an impactful way from Day 1. The company highly values the work of interns and has an exciting schedule of trainings, events, and networking opportunities.

Advice

Be open to learning and constructive criticism. I think those are keys to many jobs, but I especially find them applicable here. Talk to as many people as possible and learn about the jobs/tasks that occur upstream and downstream from your own. Knowledge and a willingness to break down information silos is always a useful skill set for any job in any field.

The intern activities and experiences were incredible and built great comradery with the other interns. We had opportuniteis to speak with and listen to chief executives speak, including the CEO!

IT Intern

June - August 2017 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

Steelcase is a really amazing company. The people were extremely friendly, very open and relaxed culture, no getting coffee for others (but plenty for yourself if that is your thing). They gave me real work to do, work that was valuable to the company. There are plenty of other of interns who are like minded and extremely professional. Grand rapids is a fun town, lots to do and explore. TL;DR: If you work here you will not regret it.

What I wish was different

That I didn't have to come back to school.

Advice

This is one of the only times in your life that you'll be able to explore a completely new city for like 10 weeks before you would just have to live there so make the most of it, find out if it is a place you could see yourself living. Take the initiative. Speak up, ask people out to lunch, volunteer for what work you find interesting. Steelcase will back you 100% if it is a value to them.

Product Marketing Intern

May 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I love the freedom, flexiblity, and culture of not only my immediate team but of Steelcase as a whole. I have never been treated as "just an intern" on my team. I am leading projects and deliverables as well as creating marketing tools from the very first stage to the final stage. My team encourages and values my opionion and suggestions and is always willing to spend time helping me learn along the way.

What I wish was different

I wish there was a better description of my internship online. The description did not really capture what I would be working on.

Advice

Don't be afraid to jump right into difficult tasks. A lot of times I would be given a project with very little instruction and had to figure it out as I went along. Use your manager as a resource for help however, try and work on the project as much as you can before asking for help. Also when you do ask for help try to come up with a few different solutions to the problem first and explain why those potential solutions might work and then ask which they would recommend or if they have a different idea entirely of what to do.
