What I liked

I was a part of the UCSD STARS Research Program in the summer of 2020. This was a wonderful experience that allowed me to expand my knowledge in the area of neuroscience. At the end of the program, we were able to present in UCSD’s annual research conference which was such an honor. Overall, this was a wonderful learning experience and I am thankful for this opportunity.

What I wish was different

Due to this program taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to conduct this program online. This was to my disappointment because I was looking forward to being on campus for the duration of this summer program.

Advice

Take advantage of all opportunities in this program! They provide you so many resources as well as access to faculty members.

What I liked

Having a different experience, gaining knowledge, considering to go to medical school were of the few thing that I benefited from.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was long enough to have a field research experience so that I can contribute fruitful outcome to my society.

Take every opportunity you have, don't hesitate to try something new, it might be worth it!!

I wish that I had had a little more direct mentorship.

Advice

Students should try their hardest and innovate in the research they’re doing. This is the best way to get a good letter of recommendation.

I really enjoyed helping students. I was able to teach them my methods of solving problems and help them deal with difficult problems. I taught them about how to approach a problem and I really learned a lot from them as well.

I wish that I had chosen to work with a post--doc who I got along with better.

Advice

Communication is key. If you don't understand how to do something, make sure you find out and communicate with people who know what they are doing. Also find someone who is willing to communicate with you.
