Peer Advising Intern: SBS Advising Resource Center

The SBS Peer Advising Internship program serves to set all students on a meaningful pathway to success throughout their college career and instill in them an understanding of being a part of a greater global community.

Mission
The SBS Peer Advising Internship program promotes the understanding and fulfillment of university and college requirements through student centered advising and mentoring relationships that support personal, academic and career exploration. Peer Advising Interns (PAI) advocate for the comprehensive awareness and use of campus resources in order to connect students to opportunities for continue support and growth. Furthermore, PAIs serve their fellow students fairly and equitably while honoring individuality through encouraging the holistic development of personal paths to success.


This internship is for a minimum two-semester commitment and students receive two credits per semester. Each semester, interns will commit to 80 hours (on average, 6-hours per week).


Roles and Responsibilities


Attendance and participation in year-long professional development and training
  • Interns must attend a training on Monday, September 2nd (Labor Day), 2:30pm – 4:30pm in the Advising Resource Center, 128 Thompson Hall 
  • Interns must be available to attend Friday morning trainings, 9:00am – 10:00am. Weekly the first 4 weeks of classes each semester. Biweekly for the remaining weeks of each semester
  • Interns must complete related assignments and activities, which mostly relate to career and professional development.

Scheduled hours working in the ARC, five hours per week
  • Interns will submit class schedule and be assigned weekly hours to work in the ARC. Each intern will have set hours for the semester and is responsible for finding another intern to cover hours in the event of an unexpected conflict.
  • Interns will assist students with general questions regarding courses, major exploration, general education and SBS major specific requirements, campus resources, UMass technology (SPIRE, Moodle, Handshake, etc.), and resume and cover letter drafts.
  • Interns will develop creative ways to increase student visits to the ARC, as well as enhance current programming efforts. For example, specific drop-in hours for resume review, SPIRE questions, Handshake account set-up, and group advising workshops.
  • Interns will assist with front desk responsibilities as needed. This includes welcoming students, answering the phones, taking messages, conducting resource referrals to other office, and other tasks as assigned.

Assisting with SBS ARC programs and events


 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • At least one of your majors must be an SBS major: Anthropology, Communication, Economics, Journalism, Landscape Architecture, Legal Studies, Political Science, Resource Economics, Social Thought and Political Economy, Sociology, Sustainable Community Development, or the SBS Exploratory Track.
  • Student must have completed one full-time semester prior to the start of the position and must be in good academic standing.
  • Commitment for the entire academic year when school is in session from September-May.
  • Available for five office hours a week plus on-going trainings and/or programming (on average a total of 6 hours per week). Must have some availability during ARC business hours, Monday-Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm. Some evening and weekend hours as needed for programming initiatives.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to be supportive and non-judgmental.
  • Enthusiasm and motivation surrounding SBS and Pathways, as well as Career and Professional Development topics.
  • Ability to represent the ARC in an approachable and informative way.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and be flexible with your schedule.

  • Qualified applicants will be notified via UMass email if/when they will be offered an interview.
  •  Interviews will start with a group interview portion followed by an individual interview portion, both on the same day, and totaling 45 minutes (30-minute group & 15-minute individual).
  • Interviews will take place on a rolling basis with a goal of making all intern selections by Monday, April 29th.
