About Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc.

Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc. (CIL) is the world’s leading producer of stable isotopes and stable isotope-labeled compounds. With over 500 employees and laboratories in four countries, CIL specializes in the process of labeling biochemical and organic compounds with highly enriched, stable (nonradioactive) isotopes of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Our chemists substitute common atoms (e.g., 1H, 12C, 14N, 16O) with rare, highly valued isotopes (e.g., 2H, 13C, 15N, 18O) so that the final product can be readily measured or traced using mass spectrometry (mass spec) or nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). CIL’s products are utilized in laboratories, medical, government and academic research centers and health care facilities worldwide. We are proud that CIL products have contributed to medical advancements in cancer research, new-drug development, environmental analysis, genomics and proteomics, and medical diagnostic research. In the past decade as the fields of proteomics and metabolomics have developed as leading techniques for determining biomarkers for disease presence, progression and the monitoring of therapeutic response, CIL has worked closely with industry leaders and researchers to provide the stable isotope-labeled tools needed for improved quantitation of complex systems.

CIL's vision began when it was founded in 1981 by Dr. Joel Bradley, an organic chemist from MIT. Drawing on a commitment to high-quality products, superior customer service, innovative new products and breadth of product lines, CIL quickly emerged as a leader in its field. CIL now produces more than 15,000 products and has ISO 13485, ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO Guide 34 quality systems, as well as cGMP production capabilities. Over the past several decades CIL has increased its global footprint and now has over 400 employees in its facilities located in four countries. The CIL group is comprised of five companies: Cambridge Isotope Laboratories, Inc. (CIL) and CIL Isotope Separations, LLC (CIS) in the US; CIL Canada in Montreal, Canada; Euriso-Top in Saclay, France; and ABX GmbH in Dresden, Germany.

CIL’s state-of-the-art production facilities are located at the company’s headquarters in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and the company’s primary production laboratories are located in Andover, Massachusetts. Our isotope-separation facility located in Xenia, Ohio, houses the world’s largest 13C and 18O isotope-separation facilities and the world’s only commercial D2O enrichment columns.

Dr. Bradley and the CIL Executive Team all share the same commitment to quality and service. Our experts collaborate with all of our customers to aid in pivotal research that is being conducted in laboratories worldwide. Our partnerships not only help to support our global reach but allow us to bring forward innovative products in our pursuit of scientific discovery.

Process Engineering Co-op

“I was given the opportunity to be in charge of meaningful projects that had a positive impact on the company. This allowed me to gain hands-on experience in the field and improve my leadership skills. I also enjoyed collaborating with other like-minded engineers and learning from their expertise. My supervisor taught me valuable knowledge about the industry and how the plant operates on a daily basis. I found the different chemical processes to be especially interesting to learn about as well. For my second co-op term at CIL, I was put in charge of implementing various process changes around the plant. This involved creating drawings and P&IDs as well as coordinating with contractors to get the work done properly. I liked that I was trusted with more responsibilities and larger projects as I continue to gain more experience in the field. I also see a lot of opportunities for growth within the company. During my third term, I completed several projects in different areas of the plant. Specifically, I wrote a procedure on how to pull samples from one of the many separation cascades and also how to analyze those samples using mass spectrometry. Additionally, I used Aspen Plus software to simulate gas flow through different pipes and calculated the pressure drop for each. I utilized AutoCAD to edit various P&IDs and 3D models of the processes as well. I enjoyed expanding my technical skills and learning to use multiple different types of software.”

“I really enjoyed learning about the different processes and how different engineering perspectives shaped their design. By executing continuous improvement projects, creating and updating drawings, and observing operations, I was able to learn more in-depth about a few processes. I was encouraged to provide my own engineering ideas, and rarely was I given "busy work." I am excited to see how the expansion projects that I worked on come together. ”
