Camp Alleghany for Girls

Camp Counselor

June - August 2021 • Caldwell, WV

What I liked

The experience gained by creating lesson plans for campers, as well as living outdoors.

What I wish was different

The living conditions are not great, being in a tent for two months can be rough. The hours are also very long, with only short one hour breaks daily.

Advice

Be prepared for rough conditions, but try to stay positive. The morale of the whole team is what will get you through.

Camp Counselor

June 2018 • Lewisburg, WV

What I liked

Camp Alleghany is a wonderful place to work. I love how when I work a summer at camp, not only do I get to spend my summer making an impact on campers' lives, but I also learn so many other skills, such as leadership, communication, time management, organization, initiative, and so much more that will help me in the future. Alleghany truly values empowering young women to be leaders, no matter what career path we go into. I also love how counselors get constructive criticism, as well as how our directors and leadership team members are also open for feedback.

What I wish was different

I honestly wouldn't change anything about my experience working at Alleghany, other than maybe some better WiFi in the counselor's lodge, but other than that Alleghany has competitive, if not higher pay than other camps, as well as several recently renovated facilities.

Advice

When I was getting ready to come back for my second summer, I thought I'd learned everything I could during my first summer. The truth is, nothing can truly prepare you for a summer at camp, other than coming in with an open mind, ready for a challenging, yet exciting and super rewarding 8 weeks.
