Camp Fire Alaska

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Cooper Landing, AK

What I liked

I loooooved my summer in Alaska. I learned more about myself in a short 3 months than I ever have before! Being a camp counselor, you are working 24/7 with youth. The hours are quite exhausting but you build a connection that is like no other. I worked with 12-16 year olds and it was amazing. You start to realize that every life is different and even kids experience hardships. However, when they came to camp, we were able to let them forget about their home lives and just live simply and have fun for a week. When I wasn't working, I was exploring the beautiful state of Alaska. On each of my days off, my coworkers and I would travel everywhere, we even went backpacking in Denali National Park, which was a huge feat for all of us. During the summer of 2019 I learned the importance of being present. I learned how important it is to make connections and stay in touch with my surroundings.

What I wish was different

It honestly was cut too short. When I left I knew I wanted to be there longer!

Advice

Going to a new place where you don't know anyone is terrifying. If you are contemplating spending the summer in a new area, I say do it. You will learn more about yourself than ever and it will be such a good experience whether you like it or not.
