Summer Camp Counselor

What I liked

I loved forming meaningful connections with kids and families that have continued beyond the summer. It was also amazing to be outside all summer and be technology free. I made incredible friendships with my fellow counselors that have also continued beyond the summer. I learned how to care for babies, talk to parents, lead activities and be a role model for young children.

What I wish was different

We worked 6 days a week for 11 weeks from 8 until 4:30 and then often had night duties. Because of this, I became burnt out towards the end of the summer. I would've liked more time off or at least more down time throughout the day. We also were pretty understaffed which made it difficult to give the proper attention to each child.

Advice

Just have fun with it! Be enthusiastic and optimistic and it will rub off on the kids!

Summer Camp Counselor at a Ropes Course

What I liked

I loved my coworkers, the atmosphere, the campers, and the schedule.

What I wish was different

The pay was inadequate for the number of hours put in, and the administration did not provide enough mental health resources.

Advice

This is definitely a job for people who love people. If you're a bit shyer, or not willing to be in customer service mode 24/7, this may not be the place for you. That being said, it's one of the most rewarding summer jobs out there, and a place to meet friends that will last you a lifetime.
