Camp Wakonda

What I liked

I loved the environment of Camp Wakonda. The Camp Director and staff are so welcoming and truly want to see you grow as a person and together as a community. This was my first year working as a camp counselor and at this camp, but I felt at home as soon as I got to know the staff. I loved watching the kids grow throughout the week in their faith as they slowly embraced camp for what it truly is. I also loved watching how I personally grew through each trial I encountered with campers, weather, planning, etc. Coming out of a COVID year, this experience of gaining a true family and participating in camp fun was just what I needed.

What I wish was different

If I could go back and change anything, I wish that I would've worked here sooner. I also wish that we had an additional week or two of program weeks with the kids. I was just starting to feel truly home when camp ended!

Advice

If you're on the fence about working at Camp Wakonda, DO IT. I cannot express how fulfilling this experience was for me. As a Pre-Veterinary major, I was REALLY hesitant about signing up to be a camp counselor after I lost a year of possible internships due to COVID. I also knew nobody who worked at camp before this summer, but I gained some true friends and great memories that I wouldn't trade for the best internship or anything else in the world. This experience will challenge you and change you, but ultimately the work is fulfilling. You WILL be exhausted at the end of each day, tired of dealing with kids, and will probably get a little scraped up, but the staff WILL be there for you. Everyone is all in, all of the time. All hands on deck. It truly is a community that fills each other up, and that kind of support is so rare in this day and age. If you need a sign to say yes to Camp Wakonda, consider this it.
