Central Contra Costa Sanitary District

About Central Contra Costa Sanitary District

Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) is a local government agency founded in 1946. Our core service is providing wastewater treatment and collection to nearly 500,000 residents and over 3,000 businesses in Contra Costa County, about 30 miles northeast of San Francisco. In addition, we also operate a collection facility for household hazardous waste (such as batteries, paint, and fluorescent lights) and distribute recycled water. We have about 270 employees, all of whom are proud of our mission to protect public health and the environment.

Central San is responsible for protecting the health of the public and the environment. We are committed to being good neighbors, using technology to increase quality and create efficiency, and providing a safe place for employees to work. Our mission is simply stated, but our means of accomplishing it is quite complex.

“My three summers at Central San have been wonderful and very insightful. I had the opportunity to mainly work at the Permit Counter, but also worked on projects for different groups within the Engineering department. It is a great work environment and everyone is always willing to help! Everyone is also very nice- I always enjoy and look forward to my summer internships here. ”

“I was excited to work with professionals in my field who focus on other aspects of my major that aren't/haven't been emphasized in my educational career. I gained invaluable skills that will undoubtedly further my professional career. ”
