Water Programs Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This is possibly one of the best intern programs in the US. They really care about the interns especially since they are unpaid. They gave me interesting projects to work on, showed me respect, were really inclusive, and set up intern events for appreciation. The office was also super cool and had great snacks. Most importantly, I really agreed with the mission of ending the water crisis and I felt like charity: water does it very effectively.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute wasn't so long (1.5 hours) and that I got compensated more for travel. Also, I wish I got paid but I don't regret it.

Advice

For anyone trying to gain experience, I say don't be shy with coworkers. It wasn't until my last week that I really pushed myself to go out for coffee with coworkers. Those coffee breaks was where I learned the most about potential career moves and just networking from people who have had a similar experience as me.

What I liked

My manager was incredible and really let me shape the internship to what I was interested in. I loved the people I worked with and they made it an awesome experience to come into work every day.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute had been shorter, but I couldn't really change that! Also,, I wish that more non-profit internships were paid, but again that's something that can't really be changed.

Advice

For a future intern at c: w I would say you absolutely should take advantage of the coffee meetings they suggest you go on! For an intern anywhere, I would suggest you initiate coffee meetings with various people at your company, even those not in your department, to get to know them!
