MI3 Intern

May - August 2018 • Orange, CA

What I liked

I loved being exposed to so many different sub-specialties in Pediatrics and to such a wide variety of roles around a hospital. My interest in the medical field was solidified through this internship, and I made so many connections and gained incredible mentors while exposing myself to a day in the life of a Pediatric Sub-Specialist. I also got very close with a number of fellow interns, and will surely keep in touch with them as we begin to pursue our careers in the medical field.

What I wish was different

It's hard to choose anything to change because the internship was exactly what I was looking for in a summer experience, but I wish it could have been a little longer! I was at CHOC for 6 weeks following finals week in the Spring, then I was asked to be a lead-intern for the next session so I got to come back when I could, help organize things, and even shadow a little bit more!

Advice

Take advantage of opportunities that may arise and don't be afraid to put yourself out there! At first, I was out of my comfort zone following an attending physician around the hospital floors all day, but I soon became more comfortable and was building relationships with each doctor I had the opportunity to shadow. I started understanding how the doctors and other health care professionals carried out their daily tasks and became even more in love with the medical field.
