CHOYCES

Project Manager Intern

April 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

I applied for the unpaid Project Manager Intern position with CHOYCES because of the enthusiasm of the people speaking positively about them here on Handshake. Given the economic crisis and the desperation of students to get their foot in the door, I was eager to gain experience and applied for the position. Initially, I received an email stating that they liked my profile and wanted to move forward with the interview. I promptly responded to their proposed times and dates within a day. Unfortunately, I never heard back from them. Despite sending two follow-up emails, they Ghosted me.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been better communication with potential employees. Ghosting candidates, especially for an unpaid position, where students are putting in their time and effort, can be quite disheartening. It feels like being left in the dark, and it's not just disappointing but also disrespectful. It shows that they don't respect the time and efforts of students, demonstrating a lack of consideration.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to trust your instincts and value your time and effort. If a company shows unprofessional behaviour, for example, Ghosting during the application process, it may be indicative of broader issues within the organization. Remember that your skills and contributions are valuable, and it's essential to prioritize opportunities that respect and appreciate your efforts.

Game Development Intern

November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

What I like is that I was able to finally able to work with something I like such as game development with unity since I know coding interviews had been very competitive. This isn't a hotshot company like Google, but at the bare minimum, this place gives you a little leg up in working on a project with possibly a teammate with the hope that you can slowly build your portfolio.

What I wish was different

Because this is an unpaid position, it's unfortunate that maybe this is a contributing factor where maybe there would be a team member who isn't as committed as expected. Not only that, I get the feeling that the position I am at right now isn't the most glorified internship position such as software engineering position at Google or some popular game studio. But, that's fine. Have gratitude with the things you have and make most of the experience.

Advice

When you are feeling down with all the rejection letters and failing your courses after all that hard work, just remember why you love doing what you are doing and find meaning in the struggle whenevr your coding doesn't work most the time, or when it finally works.

What I liked

Everyone at CHOYCES was really friendly and supportive. When I was first inducted into the program, there were many who welcomed me and made me feel like I belonged here. My co-workers at the department that I was designated to, which was Recruitment, were super helpful and more than willing to sacrifice their time to make me understand the ins-and-outs of recruiting. Additionally, the Weekly meetings we had would help keep the whole team organized and updated regarding current and future affairs, which I felt was a great support.

Videography Intern

September 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of this job. They are very understanding of other commitments you may have and work with you to find a schedule that fits. I also thoroughly enjoyed the teamwork. Although this is a remote internship, I still felt like I had a great opportunity to meet people from all over. This internship was a great way for me to learn how to work in a collaborative environment with many different departments teaming together for one important goal.

What I wish was different

Advice

Always remember to be communicative and collaborative. I believe that is the most important aspect of this internship considering it is fully remote. I would also suggest reaching out and getting to know your coworkers. I've met some wonderful people from all over the U.S. from participating in this internship and those are important connections I will continue to have once I have finished the internship.

Curriculum Design Intern

January 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I love having the opportunity to collaborate with various members within every department. There's alot of trust within the company itself in terms of understanding that each employer, regardless of whether they're an intern or full time working, is capable and will execute the tasks and delegate accordingly. There are such high expectations for the company in terms of your responsibilities; however, I feel that it makes you a more accountable worker and helps you gain various skills in a short period of time. The amount of collaboration and communication is astounding and the work that gets done on a daily basis feels very rewarding.

What I wish was different

The mission and vision of the company are quite strong. It goes without saying that it takes a village to make change a reality. The one thing that would have been beneficial is more exposure to the opportunities that lie at CHOYCES. With a larger influx of interns who're dedicated and interested in the company, work would progress much faster. This is not the fault of the company at all! I recognize and appreciate their frequent attempts to hire more interns! That being said, everyone regardless of what department they're from ensure in every way that all members feel supported and get the help they need.

Advice

As an educator, this is such a different pace than what I'm familiar with and if you're someone that's looking to gain alot of experience with a company that's growing along side of you, I truly cannot recommend this company more! There's so much perspective to gain in this opportunity and you really aren't restricted to your own corner of expertise. There isn't a day that I'm not collaborating with someone else within another department, which keeps the job exciting and a continual learning experience!

August - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The flexibility! It wasn’t a 9-5 so I was able to somewhat balance my schoolwork and personal life as long as I got my assignments completed. I also had to rely on my team a lot since there were many tasks, and made many networking connections by doing so.

What I wish was different

My boss had very unrealistic expectations and tended to be very aggressive towards criticism and change. I wish there would have been more of an effort on her part to engage in communication with me and other company members so we could have implemented new ideas more effectively and have more success

Advice

A “failed” experience doesn’t mean it lacks importance! I have learned so much about what I do / do not want in a future career which has helped me a lot in shaping my future career path
