City of La Grande

About City of La Grande

The City of La Grande (population 13,085) is nestled against the eastern base of the Blue Mountains, one of Oregon's oldest and largest mountain ranges. We sit at the edge of one of the largest, enclosed circular valleys in the United States, with over a million acres of fertile soil surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks. Native Americans once roamed the Grande Ronde Valley during the summer months, gathering food for the winter, and called it "The Valley of Peace."

The City of La Grande is dedicated to creating a diversified, healthy, and educated economic environment to fuel prosperity for the business community and to enhance the quality of life for residents. With an excellent transportation system, an available and trained workforce, existing manufacturing and commercial sites, and an active business community, La Grande is truly a great place to do business. Our geographic location and stable economy is very conducive to manufacturing, distribution and service industries.

The beauty of our valley also provides a quality of life that few communities can surpass. Eastern Oregon University, together with an excellent K-12 school system, provides educational opportunities for all ages, as well as ample cultural activities. Recreational activities are mere steps away and include biking, fishing, skiing, hiking, swimming and hunting.

Whether you're reading a book in our beautiful new public library, enjoying the bounty from our Farmers' Market, strolling the streets of downtown La Grande, a member of Oregon Main Street, or playing in one of our many beautiful parks, we hope you will come for a visit and consider making La Grande your home and place of business.

Sincerely,

Robert A. Strope
City Manager

“I like working in public libraries for the opportunity to provide literacy and information services to the public, as well as the interactions you get with the diverse members of your community. I also appreciate the great benefits that most public organizations offer, as compared to many of the private organizations.”
