The City of Milwaukee is the 19th largest city in the United States, with a population of over 600,000. The area of the City is over 95 square miles, and it has a large diverse population. Milwaukee has a technology driven economy, rich culture, close-knit neighborhoods and exciting recreational opportunities.

Milwaukee is the major medical, financial and educational center for the State of Wisconsin. Milwaukee is also a great transportation hub, with a large port on the lake and major rail, trucking and air transportation available.

An arts and entertainment center, Milwaukee boasts first class museums, a world-renowned symphony, opera, dance and repertory theater companies, and is a popular stop for Broadway road shows and major musical acts. Summerfest and the ethnic festivals, State Fair, the Sports show and a host of other special events are uniquely Milwaukee. Milwaukee is home to the Bucks, the Brewers, the Admirals, the Wave, a PGA golf tournament. and several major auto races. World competitors are trained at the Pettit National Ice Center.

City government provides the core of basic services concerning the health, safety and welfare of the city’s residents. It also serves the large physical infrastructure of the area. The largest portion of City resources goes to providing Police and Fire protection. The next largest amount goes to Public Works, including solid waste collection, recycling collection, streetlights, street paving and maintenance, trees, landscaping, sewer, and water services.

The City provides a large library system, health services, public housing sites, building and health inspections, zoning and housing codes, land management, port services, a geographic information system, and a Municipal Court. A number of departments provide important internal services to other departments, such as the Comptrollers Office, the Department of Administration, and the Department of Employee Relations. Many of these are housed in historic City Hall.

City government is made up of over 8,000 employees in over 1,200 different job classifications in nearly 30 departments. If the city were a private corporation, it would be the third largest company in the state!
