Aquatics Cashier

May - September 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The Parks and Rec department for the City of Phoenix has so many job opportunities. As an aquatics cashier i enjoyed the hands on work. It's not just about counting money and checking people in but also interacting with every guest and creating a safe environment for everyone.

What I wish was different

I think cashiers at swimming pools should get some first aid/ first response training, anything can happen at a pool and it would be best if everyone was well trained instead of just the lifeguards.

Advice

If you do not love Arizona summers then working a pool may not be for you. Aquatics cashiers spend half of their time in the office and the other half outside in the sun helping all the guests.

May - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I had flexible hours and got to see how to work with the city of phoenix

What I wish was different

I wish it had been a little more organized but we are already working to better the program for next summer

Advice

I would highly recommend it because I was able to learn a lot about managing and planning. I also got to work with kids and families within a community

Library Assistant

June - August 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I loved having the opportunity to learn how the library I grew up with operates from the inside. I also enjoyed that everyone working there seemed to share the load and participate in the same jobs.

What I wish was different

The nature of the public library I was at and all its public events can become a little chaotic, but the amount of people willing to help often resolved these issues.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to participate in a volunteer experience relevant to the career you want to pursue, take it. It’s so helpful to show what your future may be like.

Career Counselor Intern

June - July 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed helping individuals who would come into the career center for help. My favorite aspect of the job had to be helping older adults work a computer for applications, email, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish there were less run-ins with unconventional individuals like the homeless and people seeking trouble with the business. It sometimes really disrupted the flow (plus it was kind of dangerous).

Advice

Please come to work on time. I had a fellow intern who worked with me at the time and he was very disrespectful towards our superiors. This lead to many of them talking about him behind his back. Just be responsible and earn that money!

Pool Lifeguard

May - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

It was an easy job that I have been doing for the past five summers. It can be quite fun and also quite stressful. You work in the summer sun and have to deal with, depending on the pool you are at, a lot of people. It pays well and you can make new friends from life guarding.

What I wish was different

Well I don't think I would change much about it. The worse part is having to work in the summer heat and I can't really do anything to change that.

Advice

If you want to have this job you have to apply early. Also you only can have a bout a week off so you have to plan accordingly., but you are only working for about two months so it isn't that bad.

Street Transportation Intern

May - August 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work on a project with another department in the transportation programming and planning division because most of my classes have been planning focused. The department that I worked in was a lot more engineering focused which was useful to learn, but not as relevant as I was hoping for.

Community support Intern

June - July 2018 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I liked the experience overall. It was interesting to work in a setting where I would help guide people who didn't know how to work computers. I also created signs that helped promote the business I worked in (they found out i was an art student). I also enjoyed chatting with the other employees/counselors.

What I wish was different

I wish i had known more going in. I didn't know how to work basic office supplies like the scanner and work phone. It made working at the assistant counter much more difficult.

Advice

Always be respectful to your employers. Also always be punctual (as often as possible), or the other employees will start talking about you behind your back. Just don't be a sassy teenager who complains about coming to work and doing you job to get paid.

What I wish was different

I wish I could of re-newed my lifeguard certification so I could move up to manager.

Advice

Get to know your staff and don’t be shy. Creating a fun work and hardworking environment is key to running a successful business.
