Colliers

Commercial real estate intern

June - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

The program allowed me to rotate through 9 lines of business within the organization giving me experience in everything from retail brokerage to property management and even in capital markets.

What I wish was different

I wish they had focused the program towards the brokerage and capital markets roles and less on the support roles (accounting, lease admin, etc.)

Advice

It's an amazing workplace with very friendly people who are always ready to help. Ignoring the slightly below average compensation ($10/hr), this is a great professional experience in commercial real estate and will set you up well for the future.

Accountant Intern

July 2019 • Honolulu, HI

What I liked

I liked the amount of responsibilities I was given. I enjoyed learning beginning to ending accounting processes for the properties I was given. It was as if I was managing 5 different small businesses at one time.

What I wish was different

I wish the training was a little more organized and the internship program was more established. They do not usually have internships on a regular basis so it was a little difficult starting out. However, once trained, I was felt confident with my work, as if I was one of their regular full time accountants.

Advice

Even if you are not required, I would advise others to seek out internship opportunities. They are a wealth of knowledge.

Client Relations

August - December 2019 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

My boss and other co workers are always giving me different projects to work on and trust me to help them with their work.

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing. My boss was very up front during my phone interview about what the job duties were so I knew what I was getting myself into. Now that I’ve started the job is so much better than I expected.

Advice

Definitely don’t judge a job based on the job description. When I had my phone interview for this job it didn’t sound like something I wanted to do, but I gave it a chance and now I love working here.
