Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Legislative Intern

April - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The office I worked in was very supportive and allowed me to try different things. I was granted a lot of independence in my projects. There were also amazing speakers, including Governors Baker and Dukakis.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to see the House in action more.

Advice

Be willing to advocate for yourself and play up your strengths.

Legislative Aide Intern

February - August 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Working in the oldest legislature in the U.S. was an amazing experience. I conducted research and drafted documents for a member of the MA House of Representatives. I really enjoyed being in the workplace I aspired to one day become employed with. The result was that I built a network, got invaluable experience, and was offered a job.

What I wish was different

The pandemic occurring during my internship was tough but we all, myself included, persevered.

Advice

My advice is to do everything you can to get in front of the people that are connected in the career field you aspire to work in. An unpaid internship in the office you want to explore a career with often leads to building a network and lends to landing the job you want (or experience that further defines your career interests). The most important to opening doors is being there!
