I really enjoyed how the program partnered us up and gave us a lot of freedom to pack, organize and distribute meals to inner-city kids who faced food insecurity. I appreciate the relationships that I built with my partner and the families that I served.
What I wish was different
There were a lot of rules surrounding how and where the meals could be eaten. For example, meals that normally would be served hot like burgers or chicken nuggets were served cold and meals could not be taken on the go. Families that had a tight connection or for some reason couldn't eat at the service site had to go without. I felt terrible telling needy families that they couldn't take food with them. I wish it could be different.
Advice
One piece of advice that I would share with someone who might consider this experience is to find something significant everyday. The deliveries and services can begin to feel very routine and if you don't focus on the lives that are changing and the hearts that are learning compassion, it can become boring and unfulfilling. I focused on building relationships with people instead of solely serving their practical needs.

What I liked
Loved getting to work so closely with the kids everyday and actually forming bonds with them as the summer went on.
