I liked the steady hours Monday-Friday. It was a relaxed work environment but also lively with lots of things to do.

What I wish was different

It would be nice to have some more variety.

Advice

Have a plan for the day and write out a list of tasks needed to get done with priorities for each one due to the many tasks.

Student Worker

What I liked

I really love my coworkers and all of the staff at the library. There is definitely a skeleton crew of student workers in the summer, and we worked together a lot. It was really great to get to know my fellow students better and build community with them, as well as the staff members who are truly amazing people. The library is also a very laid-back place to work in the summer so we were able to focus on bigger projects instead of being caught up with smaller tasks that usually occupy us during the semester.

What I wish was different

Every summer we take inventory of the books in our library. This involves scanning the barcodes of every single book we have in our collection so we can find ones that are missing or out of order. Because of technology issues we weren't able to start this project until halfway through the summer and we're actually still doing it even now (hopefully we'll be done by Christmas)! If you are studying upstairs in Miller Library and hear a continuous beeping that's probably us scanning books. I really wish we'd been able to finish that project before all the students came back.

Advice

I was planning on getting another job this summer but it fell through, which is why I decided to stick around at the library. Here's the thing I learned: even when the job you're working isn't necessarily your dream job, you can still learn so much! You just need to have an open-mind and open eyes, choosing to really invest in the work you're doing. Through working at the library I've been able to continually develop more skills that will help me for the rest of my life. One example of that is learning how to do research and do it well. I've become comfortable with browsing online databases that have thousands (literally) of resources like journal articles, ebooks, news and more! I now use those skills to help others access the resources they need to take them one step further to completing their degrees and realizing their dreams!

I loved being able to take care of the campus and make it look nice for summer events or prospects visiting.

It’s not in our control, but August and July were very dry and made it hard for us to mow and make the grass look nice.

Advice

Working with friends and even making new friends is what makes this job so much fun!

It was on campus and the same job I worked during the year. My supervisors were great. It was a 1st shift job, full time. I enjoyed the experience and learning new things.
