Everyone was very friendly and willing to teach. I learned so many new things that I will be able to apply in my future positions. The culture is very welcoming and provided many opportunities for growth.
What I wish was different
I wish there was more work, sometimes it was slow.
Advice
Take advantage of all the development opportunities.

Global Communications and Media Relations Intern
June - August 2021 • New York City, NY
What I liked
I loved being a part of such an organized internship program. In addition to the hands-on work experience, interns got to participate in a number of professional development events like international policy simulations and Q&A sessions with prominent CFR experts. It was the perfect mix of getting to apply existing skills while also learning so many new things. I loved all of my supervisors, who were so dedicated to helping me get the most out of my experience. Though the internship was online, I became friends with a number of other interns!
What I wish was different
I wish there was a more solidified process for return offers! Entry-level positions can only be applied to a few months prior to the job’s start date.
Advice
Even if your internship is work-from-home, give it every ounce of your all! Really do your work from 9-5 as opposed to laying in bed watching Netflix, and if that means creating more work for yourself, just do it! In the end, the stress translated to value and augmented my sense of accomplishment when the summer ended. If you have to work online, try as hard as you can to break through those awkward barriers with your coworkers, who sometimes feel like they only exist through a computer screen. Send funny gifs and make some commentary during weekly meetings. Make yourself stand out through good communication skills and poignancy!

Research Associate, Global Health
June - August 2017 • New York City, NY
What I liked
The opportunities to go to meetings with leaders in global international affairs and learn from experts
Independence to take on projects
Intern career development events
What I wish was different
The interns worked in different parts of the building and not in one area, so it was more difficult to get to know one another
Advice
Take initiative and communicate what you're interested in, both in terms of events and projects. Ask people outside of your department to get lunch or coffee, and learn more about what they do and how they got to where they are.
