Dotdash Meredith

Editorial Intern

June - August 2022 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I interned at PEOPLE Magazine through the American Society for Magazine Editors (ASME) intern program. I liked that the editors gave me pretty much any responsibilities I wanted to take on, from pitching articles for digital to writing book reviews for print to covering red carpets and interviewing famous actors. I loved working in the New York office in downtown Manhattan and getting to sit in on daily meetings and interact with the other interns and the editors.

What I wish was different

I wish the intern program had been more structured, since we were kind of thrown in to the job without much preparation or guidance.

Advice

Always pitch ideas to your higher-ups and ask to take on projects even if you don't know if they will say yes! I got to do so many cool things simply because I approached an editor and asked if I could do them.

Photo Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work in two different departments where I was able to be part of the premedia team editing for People Magazine and a studio assistant in the photo department. I was able to have hands on experience where the work I did was published.

What I wish was different

There was nothing I would change. The premedia team had me do work that an employee would do and I was able to work side by side instead of them giving me projects to do. The photo studio would listen to my thoughts and suggestions and really valued my ideas.

Advice

Take every opportunity you get and make the best of it. Never be afraid to speak about your ideas and thoughts and if you get given a task, always put 110% into your work.

Digital Marketing Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I like getting to experience what it is like to work for a major company. Meredith recently acquired Time Inc. and so while I was there they were going through a restructuring period. I like getting to work closely with people who are experts in their field. This gave me the opportunity to witness the ins and outs of the business.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been involved in a more structured program. I felt that sometimes I got lost in the shuffle of things. While I was given many responsibilities and tasks, there was not much guidance.

Advice

I would say that putting yourself out there and not being afraid to ask for work is key. I had to find my own work sometimes but it pushed me outside of my comfort zone.
