Biochemistry Intern

What I liked

I liked being exposed to biochemistry research. At this time, I had never taken a biochemistry course before. So, this experience gave me much-needed insight into its principles and applications.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience was a little longer. The program felt short, but my time there was great.

Advice

I would say this experience is impactful and gives great insight into research in STEM fields. If you are interested in research, DSSI allows you to experience it first-hand.

Tour Guide and Student Ambassador

What I liked

I really liked having an opportunity to hone into my communication and public speaking skills, as well as being the face of the university for the Summer. I enjoyed the job so much that I began officially working part-time for Admissions at Drew as a tour guide and admissions reception desk student supervisor.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a bigger team. Since most students go home for the Summer, we did not have enough tour guides to get coverage in case we ever needed one. Besides that, I feel like it was a very special experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, always show up at least 15 minutes earlier than what is expected of you, and be willing to get out of your comfort zone to help others. There were days in which I gave an extra tour for prospective students that simply showed up to the admissions building without signing up, and I still gave them a tour. When you are representing an institution, you need to care about the image you are portraying above your personal desires.
