Library Circulation Assistant

September 2021 • Madison, NJ

What I liked

The staff are very friendly and there is plenty of opportunity to practice customer service skills with patrons and students, as well as through phone calls. There is lots of time to do homework while you work, and it is a very welcoming environment of smiles and greetings with coworkers. You are able to learn the ins and outs of the library and it’s system, which allows you to help others as well as yourself find EXACTLY what you’re looking for. The library itself is also very quiet and serene, and it’s even therapeutic doing tasks like shelving because there’s so much space to be alone with the books!

What I wish was different

I have only known everyone there for a short time before a few retired. I wish I had worked there since freshman year as well!

Advice

Just go for it! Working in a library will be just about the most serene and peaceful job you will ever have! And it’s a great way to work on your people skills and to brighten someone’s day. If people don’t know you now, they will once they see you at the desk!
