Resident Assistant
June - August 2019 • Durham, NC
What I liked
Lots of interaction with students and staff from a variety of cultures. Really supportive RA staff. Ability to say you worked for Duke.
What I wish was different
Program policies require students to have 24/7 supervision, which means you're primarily responsible for babysitting students throughout the program. You must escort students to class, supervise the class, and escort the students to all meals and extracurricular activities. This position felt more like a camp counselor or babysitter than an RA.
Advice
Approach the opportunity with an open mind and learn to be more "flexible" than you thought possible.Things constantly change at the last minute as a result of disorganization and the administration expects you to constantly respond to these changes in a positive manner.
