Fit and Fall Proof Intern

April - July 2019 • Idaho Falls, ID

What I liked

This was an amazing experience. I loved that I was able to take what I learned from my education and training and apply it in a real life situation. I was able to gain experience and see the things I had been learning in action. I loved being able to get to know my participants individually and my sites as a whole. This helped me to create lesson plans that fit them as a site, but also individually.

What I wish was different

Networking can be difficult in this internship, but it is not impossible. It is a good idea to really get to know your participants and to ask to shadow people at the Public health office.

Advice

Really get to know the participants and make them feel valued. By getting to know your participants individually, as well as your sites as a whole, you are able to create lessons that are tailored to them. Remind them to listen to what their bodies are telling them, knowing they can modify them and work from there, and teaching them to understand what muscles are being used and the benefits of the exercises. This is an amazing opportunity to apply the things you have been learning all throughout your college career.
