It was an awesome opportunity to devote all my spare time to working with children who are refugees and children of people who came to the US as refugees. The staff was extremely dedicated, and it was beautiful to see how former students had come back to work for the program that had helped them through school.
What I wish was different
I wish I could have spent more of my high school years doing this.
Advice
There is no such thing as 'no opportunities'. Even though you may not have the most glamorous internships handed to you on a platter, the most fulfilling thing you can do (helping people) is also the most universally available. While internships that are clearly related to an industry you are interested may be helpful for a career you may work in for a while, helping people is a long-term commitment. Jobs may change, but there are always people in need of help all around you.
