What I liked
I enjoyed working with patients with different diagnoses in addition to the different settings as a FOX rehab intern. FOX rehab typically works in patient's homes, which I did, but I also had the opportunity to work through FOX at Sunrise Assisted Living Facility. It was interesting to see the similarities and differences between the patients who lived at home and those who lived in an assisted living facility. Before beginning my internship, I assumed patients living at home would be close to independent in their daily tasks, and that those living in assisted living depended on nursing aids to assist them with tasks. I learned that each patients level of independence did not depend on their setting; some patients living at home did not recognize that they required additional help, making it difficult for them to reach out to others and go through therapy. While patients at the assisted living facility often demonstrated interest in occupational therapy sessions, and wanted to learn how they could increase their safety with activities such as grooming, dressing, and feeding.
