Friends of Hoja Nueva

Intern for Rainforest Conservation Non-profit

June - August 2018 • Las Piedras, Madre de Dios Region

What I liked

I enjoyed being in the wilderness for weeks at a time. Also, experiencing a different culture and the friendliness of people who have never meet you before was jaw-dropping. People are prideful, and when you meet a person in their homeland who has pride for their country it allows for you to receive the best experience. It also has to be mentioned that the varieties of fruit are worth the trek to Peru all by themselves.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could've studied or learned more Spanish while in Peru, I wish that there was less sand flies, and I wish that an intern's expectations and schedule would've been made more clear. With that being said, all of these problems are inherent to Peru, not necessarily a issue with Hoja Nueva.

Advice

Say yes to unique opportunities. Go on night and morning walks, visit other native villages, and help when help is needed.
