Furaat Incorporated

Human Resources Intern

September - December 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I liked the different tasks I was assigned to during the entire internship. I really liked the interaction I had with, not only the company's HR staff and the HR director as well, but also the interaction with potential future employees for the company. I worked closely with two recruiters to schedule orientation dates for recently hired employees among other things.

What I wish was different

An important piece of information the company promises or states is that, according to Furaat, about 90% of interns get hired. I was really interested to get hired at the end of my internship. This is one of the reasons I applied to intern with this company. In fact, during the internship, there were times in which the question "would you be interested to work at Furaat" was asked many times. This assumption prompted me to work even harder for them, applying the principle "going the extra mile." At the end of the internship, I got to be interviewed by Furaat's owner for a Recruiter assistant position for a different unit (home care) company. I have passed the interview successfully, according to the interviewer, and I was promised to be contacted by the interviewer again, by January 5th to set up the basis of my employment. It was also mentioned that this position might not be open, since they were trying this new business and because things could change yet more with COVID; which I totally understood. However, I did not hear from them until about January 14 and after sending a text message inquiring about the position. Although I understand that things have changed recently due to COVID, or whatever reason they may have had to decide not to hire me anymore, I wished they could have been a little more considerate and polite and sent me an email stating, appropriately, their thoughts and final decisions. Just like them do deserve all my respect, I believe, since I always put extra effort in all I did for them, I do deserve all their respect as well, and an email would have changed the perspective I now have about them.

Employee Engagement and Retention Intern

September - December 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed this internship as I was given many projects to work on and my supervisors trusted me to produce good quality work. They also provided a daily task list, making it clear of what I needed to cover during the day. I was able to engage with many employees which allowed me to understand the open and welcoming company culture that Furaat Inc has. I was able to work with different functions of HR to gain a better understanding of each department and help aid in whatever was needed. This internship provided me with a good overview of HR and how different departments work together.

What I wish was different

I wish I interacted with my fellow interns more and worked on projects with them. Being virtual can get lonely, so I wish I had more opportunities to talk to other interns to get to know them better.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions, your supervisors are there to help you. Any time I had any issues, my supervisors would always answer them. Be patient as well, your supervisors handles a lot so be able to manage your time wisely and be productive.

Human Resources Intern

June - July 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to be creative and own my projects. I valued my manager and the other employees, I learned a lot from them. I experienced a difficult family loss towards the end of my time there, and my manager was very understanding and flexible in working with me, which I will always appreciate and shows their concern and care for their employees (and I was just an intern).

What I wish was different

Fully remote work definitely affects the internship experience, I'm sure if it was in person I would have made better connections with my fellow interns and employees which is something I would have enjoyed. But I wouldn't have had the internship if it wasn't remote, so in the end it was really a benefit! I thought I would have the opportunity to shadow some HR employees, but my tasks took me in a different direction and it might have been difficult to do remotely.

Advice

Ask questions! You will get help and answers, the best thing you can do is ask away. Have courage to share your ideas and thoughts, they encourage creativity to improve the company in any way. And don't think you can skim by because it is unpaid - apply yourself well and work hard, and you will get valuable skills and experience. You get what you put in!

Talent Acquisition Intern

June - August 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

This was a great internship because every day I had a set of tasks that had to get done. With COVID-19, this was a completely remote internship and the way Furaat Inc. organized the daily tasks was seamless. I also appreciated that there was strong communication between myself and my supervisors. Every day I had to write about what I learned, any recommendations and questions that I had about a particular task.

What I wish was different

While I was doing this internship, I was working a full-time job. I wish I was able to work more with Furaat, however, they were very flexible with my schedule and were able to increase my hours on the days I was working with my other job.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions, ask for clarification and take notes! Every one that communicated with at Furaat was super helpful and understanding.

Administrative Assistant Intern

September - December 2020 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Cristina is amazing, she helped me with so many things.

What I wish was different

In the beginning it seems like you're actually making a difference in the company but as you go through your internship, it becomes more like work that they don't want to do. Halfway through, you stop learning about what your internship is supposed to be about and instead do monotonous tasks that don't benefit you at all, rather it benefits them. This is also all unpaid so it is free labor done for their behalf. While I enjoyed some of the people, it is not organized in the best way and it's more of something you can put on your resume.

Advice

Don't expect to learn much.

What I liked

My supervisors were very communicative and helped me throughout my entire internship with day to day tasks and the project I was assigned for their company.

What I wish was different

I wish it wasn’t remote but because of COVID19, we couldn’t be in-person which I’m sure would’ve made the experience so much more memorable.

Advice

Ask a lot of questions! Your supervisors are there to help and guide you through this internship.

HR Intern

What I liked

Nothing

What I wish was different

The communication was terrible. Absolutely racist organization. They will ask for your honest feedback but will tell you it is disrespectful every time. No one knows what they are doing. I don't think anyone in the organization has taken an HR class. Very shady ways of doing business. If you do not think exactly how they think you will be let go immediately. Absolute joke of a company. Do not be surprised if they are out of business in the near future. Do not waste your time. You will not learn anything. They will use you for tasks unrelated to your position because they do not want to do them.

Advice

Don't do it.
