Game Day USA

Marketing Intern

April - August 2022 • Naperville, IL

What I liked

I enjoyed the staff. They cared about you learning and growing as individuals

What I wish was different

I wish there was a larger payroll. Myself and the other interns calculated how much we were making hourly and it was less than $2 an hour. You will be working multiple 12 hour+ days. I still have not been paid my final check, even after doing multiple projects outside of the job description, along with building a strategy that helped push their Instagram followage over 10K followers. I have decided to not turn in a project due to me not being paid my final check yet. How you are paid is by the amount of events you work. You have to do 8 events even if you are remote or not. So it is not a strictly remote position, and you are paid $500 less then you are if you worked in office. You still do the same amount of work at the events as the in office interns. You also still need to show up for two weekly Zoom meetings and complete the same work that the in office positions do. A few differences are you don't fill up the coaches check in bags. You are not provided gas money or money for food while traveling, they only provide hotel fees. The only gas money you are given is if the event is outside of the Chicago Land area. You will be traveling far distances for each event. So at the end of your internship the money you have made will more than likely be spent on gas, food, etc. I wish I had actually learned something related to marketing, it felt like we were just used for labor and not really taught anything remotely close to the importance of digital/ social media marketing. We were taught on how to obtain a job which is nice, but that is not why I applied for the internship.

Advice

Be ready to travel far distances for little to no money. If you are in it for the money my advice to you is look for a different internship. 80% of the money you will be paid during your internship will go to paying for gas and food while working the events. Be ready to work very long days in the heat throughout the summer. Expect your summer weekends to be busy. Be professional as that is what the staff looks for if you want to obtain a full time position. Don't do the remote position as you will not get a valuable experience out of it. Work the in office position if you can.

Advice

Know what you’re getting into! The experience was amazing but it’s not for everyone. 14 hour days and weekend travel is normal.

Sport management intern

May - July 2019 • Naperville, IL

What I liked

I liked the independence and hands-on tasks for interns. I was able to learn a lot about events and sport management through my experience here.

What I wish was different

I wish that we could have participated in more sales calls and behind the scenes tasks that we weren’t able to see from the event side.

Advice

Know what your getting in to! A lot of my peer interns would complain about how little money we were making. Game Day USA was clear from the beginning about the $2500 stipend.
