Gap Medics

Medical Student Intern

May - June 2018 • Pula, Istria County

What I liked

I liked that I was able to observe and shadow many different medical departments, such as Neurology, Emergency, General Surgery, ENT and Transfusion. It was really interesting and unique to experience medicine in a clinical setting in a culture that is different from the United States. I have been able to use what I learned in Croatia in my classes in school. I also liked that it made it possible for me to gain work experience while studying abroad and it would still allow me to graduate on time. This experience allowed me to work on not only my medical knowledge, but on my independence, responsibility and general life skills.

What I wish was different

There isn't much about the experience I would change. Overall, it was incredible. I wish that it cost less and didn't take as long to travel there, but it was a once in a lifetime experience which made it all worth it!

Advice

One piece of advice I would offer is: it's ok to be nervous, especially when it comes to travelling super far away from home. The nerves are a good thing. No matter what road blocks you come to, if there is something that you want to do that will help you grow as a person, then stop at nothing to do it. Going abroad and shadowing doctors allowed me to decipher what I do and don't want to do, and it did confirm that I wanted to go into medicine.

Medical Student Intern

May - June 2018 • Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo Province

What I liked

I finally got medical exposure which I had never had the chance to get in the US!

What I wish was different

More time in the hospitals! There are opportunities for students who are interested to take additional shifts on top of the normally scheduled hours program students spend at the hospitals.

Advice

It was fantastic and they really try to round out the experience by giving students a chance to interact with local culture in addition to shadowing in the hospitals.
