Getting to witness and facilitate the behind the scenes actions of some of Gaslamp District's biggest holiday events. I also got to exercise some creative freedom when it came to marketing promo content.

Social Media Manager

January 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I liked that I was given the freedom and opportunity to take ownership of projects like launching their modeling agencies Tik Tok and creating a larger social media presence in general. I loved having a voice at Gaslamp Event Management. The ideas and input I had on events and projects were heard and given great consideration. Working directly with the CEO provided me with direct communication with what was expected of me. It also provided me with constructive criticism that ultimately made me a better social media manager and digital marketing specialist that I can take with me to future positions. It also opened up my network to investors, entrepreneurs and business owners in the San Diego area that elevated me professionally. My career acumen has benefitted considerably from interning at Gaslamp Event Management and extremely thankful to have had the opportunity to be a part of GEM!

What I wish was different

I wish we were not in pandemic. Being in the pandemic has significantly cut the production of events around San Diego. Clients are hesitant to do events due to the restrictions, the possibility of shutting down again and covid-19 protocols. A lot of our clients are bar owners, club owners and huge production companies like comic con and these are at a halt as of right now.

Advice

Take every opportunity to go to any promotional or marketing event that we have going on because that is where you can make connections with other like-minded people that are hungry to grow and to be successful.

Marketing and Event Specialist

January 2021 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

Having the opportunity to work with Gaslamp Event Management's (GEM) CEO Sin has been an amazing experience that has already taught me more than I could've imagined. Unlike other internships, GEM actually gives their interns the opportunity to be creative and have a real input when it comes to marketing, upcoming events, special projects, corresponding with clients, holding interviews, innovating ways to increase revenue, creating content, and more. Sin offers her incredibly insightful advice about everything she knows from her years as a successful business woman, and you can tell her truly cares about her SINterns.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've had the opportunity to experience this internship pre-COVID. Being able to plan and experience one of GEM's events such as Mardi Gras or Irish 4 A Day, as well as other events we've hosted in the past, is something I would've loved to be a part of this year, 2021. I definitely plan on attending these festivities in future years!

Advice

Take advantage of how hands-on this experience is; you are given the opportunity to really take charge and experience the ins-and-outs of running a successful event and marketing business. Have confidence in your abilities, listen to Sin's advice, be open to new things, and never be afraid to ask for help.
