GE Digital

Cyber Security Software Engineer

May - August 2023 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

During my time at GE Digital, I liked working on meaningful projects that have practical use cases and are in-line with core business priorities. My main project involved integrating cyber security alerts from a third party service into an existing SOAR (Security, Orchestration, Architecture, and Response) application. My secondary project was fixing and defining an unmanaged collection process for compromised hosts on GE's network. Aside from my projects, I also liked working with senior staff who are more experienced in software engineering. Collaborating with team members on projects improved my hard software engineering, problem solving, and soft people skills. Lastly, I liked the weekly constructive feedback I received from my manager to help me improve in the workplace.

What I wish was different

By far, the biggest waste factor during my internship was time. I wish interns received more capable laptops that are equipped to handle a heavy workload geared towards software engineering. My laptop featured a 1.6 GHz CPU. As a result, running multiple docker containers, a server, and front end proved difficult to do in a timely manner while also implementing new code and awaiting for that code to be compiled. Additionally, I wish more of my direct team members came into the office to do their work. I met my Assignment Leader in person for the first time during one of my last weeks as an intern.

Advice

One piece of advice I have after interning at GE Digital is to take advice from others with a grain of salt. Many people within an organization, department, or team may have conflicting perspectives. It is important to listen to everybody and to make your own conclusions using your own judgement and thinking from first principles. One person's advice may not be the best fit for another individual, which is why it's important to use your own judgment to come to conclusions and take actions that better reflect your own personal values.

Cyber Threat Intelligence Developer

May - August 2018 • Evendale, OH

What I liked

The work was cool and interesting. The field of aviation as a whole is something that interests me personally, so the opportunity to also work in cyber security in that space was very cool.

What I wish was different

I wish that my role was more technical. I managed to work in some coding, but my day to day functions didn't comprise of much work that I have done in my classes for school.

Digital Technology Leadership Program (software engineering intern)

June - August 2017 • San Ramon, CA

What I liked

I was able to work on top-notch engineering, doing data engineering with the Predix Platform. I was able to create a new data pipeline for our team that had a target of supporting 10 GB/s of distributed processing, and was able to use cool technologies like Hadoop, Apache Flink, Apache Kafka, and Spark. The technology at GE Digital is really exciting!

What I wish was different

San Ramon CA is pretty suburban and boring.

Advice

GE is really interested in your potential to grow as a future leader in your company, beyond just solely your technical expertise. Prepare for a behavioral interview.
