Girl Scouts of the USA

Senior Girl Scout

August 1993 • Santa Maria, CA

What I liked

As a child scout, I enjoyed learning outdoor skills: camping, knots, knife skills, camp fire building, box oven cooking, sanitizing and meal prep. I enjoyed working on various service projects including Leaderama, Friendship Day, and traveling through California: Knottsberry Farm, Universal Studios, Griffith Observatory, Ronald Regan Library, Sea World, Great America and Winchester Mystery House with the Jelly Belly Factory plus San Francisco. I learned how to set up booths, count cash and privately raise money with family while selling cookies and nuts. I learned how to maintain customers through magazine sells and learned to set goals through reward structure.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have participated in the organization on a national scale and internationally to learn the experiences of girls and women all over the world. I would change parts of my Silver Project to be more interfaith like my family with more education around the community I was serving. I wish more business education was given with regards to professional etiquette, resignation and notices and business models other than business cookie booth goals, set up, counting cash and tracking cash totals for cookie sales and inventory management in small quantities. I think lessons on working together as part of a leadership team would have gone farther than individual focused merit.

Advice

I recommend transparency with financial aid given to girls and their families. It should be chastened like a financial aid package. I would also recommend espousing the values of Diversity, Inclusion and Community to extend the law to other members of our communities including our school mates.
