Our crew was dedicated to improving access to public lands in addition to reducing fire hazards. The experience was extremely rewarding in addition to being informative. A lot was learned in a short time span in conditions that were not stressful. Management was extremely helpful and resourceful.
What I wish was different
Our crew worked in 8 day shifts, with 6 days off. I feel that our crew would have been more productive with a schedule of 4 days on, 3 days off
Advice
Conservation work can be labor intensive, but extremely rewarding.

Forestry Crew Member
June - August 2020 • Reno, NV
What I liked
I really liked that GBI offers career development opportunities like GIS and USA Jobs trainings.
What I wish was different
I wish there had been more consideration for crew members. There was a few times that we had complaints or problems that were ignored by the staff.
Advice
I would say don't do this job if you are sincerely trying to make a living or some summer cash. The stipend is not very impressive and they do not offer housing so living out there for the summer can be expensive. Also make sure you are willing to work hard in sometimes harsh conditions.

Archeologist
June - October 2020 • Pioneer, CA
What I liked
This was a great opportunity for professional advancement as an archeologist, as I was able to work directly with the US Forest Service, and gained some insight into federal archeology. I also quite liked that housing and transportation were provided by the Great Basin Institute.
What I wish was different
I wish COVID-19 was not a thing this year, and that I could have interacted more directly with people.
Advice
Being prepared for anything is always a useful skill to have and to advertise.
