Health Career Connection

Health Equity Intern

June - August 2023 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I liked how Health Career Connection had an internship component where I learned hard skills at my host site as well as community development and professional development aspects through the workshops and alumni networking sessions.

What I wish was different

There's not much I would change except maybe having some in-person meet ups in Midwest regions like Minnesota too in addition to the meet-ups in California and New York/Boston area would've been nice as well.

Advice

Take advantage of the opportunity and go to as many optional sessions for networking and info sessions on career paths that interest you as you can

Future Physican Leaders Intern

June - August 2020 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

I learned a lot about public health programming. I had also done FPL as a participant so it was very full-circle for me to come back as a facilitator

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person, but obviously that’s to no fault of the organization. I’m very thankful to have the opportunity at all.

Advice

Take it all in, there is a lot of info thrown at you but also a lot of great opportunities.

Engagement Specialist

June - August 2020 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

The support Health Career Connection (HCC) provides to its interns. We had lots of workshops on various topics from skill-building workshops on excel to life and career planning to COVID-19 mitigation strategies in health. They really try to match their interns with an organization that fits your interest. I was matched with Bay Area PLAN and was given a lot of leeway and independence to run my own projects, while still receiving lots of support, which I liked. We also switched to a remote version due to COVID-19 and they made it work really well.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time to interact with our internship cohort, online mixers or workshops to help develop our skills in teams maybe, so we can get to know each other better. Everyone seemed so talented and driven, it would have been nice to better establish that connection with them.

Advice

Network with as many people as you can, be open and willing to share your story. Utilize this experience to determine what your authentic health career looks like and if it what your internship experience aligns with that or not.
