Structural Engineering Intern

May 2020 • North Conway, NH

What I liked

I was working under Chris Fournier, Structural lead for HEB. He gave me guidance through every task, but also let me have my failures (and they were many) to let me learn from my mistakes time and time again. I've learned so much throughout this internship that has made my current senior year classes that much more fun and interesting. I learned business ethics and standards, how to work alongside industry professionals, and how to be the new guy. It was all a learning process every step of the way, but it was the best learning experience I could have ever been offered. The company culture is amazing - we would go out on bike rides through the North Conway trails once a week, and the people are extremely friendly and personable. It was the best internship I could have ever asked for.

What I wish was different

I wish the situation had been different with the Covid-19 Pandemic. It was challenging being trained digitally, and there were plenty of frustrating situations that would have been solved instantly in person, but with the national situation being the way it is right now, it was the best way to work this summer.

Advice

Be open to new ideas, new ways of learning, and new people! Ask the industry professionals how they got to be where they are today, and show interest in what they have to say, always. They know a LOT more than you and I, so having an open mind is paramount.
