Henry Ford Health

Volunteer

August 2022 • Royal Oak, MI

What I liked

I like the flexibility and how easy it was to communicate with coworkers at this company.

What I wish was different

I wish I could do more tasks than what I already am doing.

Advice

I would say to not be afraid of asking people if they need help because most likely they do need help but are unsure of how to ask or who to ask. Be confident and always ask your coworkers if you need help because they will step in and help no matter what the situation is.

Foodservice Assistant

November 2018 • Clinton Township, MI

What I liked

The kitchen environment is fast pace and can be stressful at times, but the staff is like a family and everyone helps each other in whatever way they can. The managers care for the staff and work with us through all our work related problems.

What I wish was different

I wish I had become a cook sooner as I enjoy the workflow and making food for patients. I get to work with other cooks on special meals and events, and feel my contributions are appreciated.

Advice

Even though it it a foodservice job, in the end you are helping people who are sick or in pain by providing them with a good hot meal freshly made for that mealtime. If you like helping people, I'd recommend the job.

Health Information

May - July 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

The staff was very nice and helpful. I like being afforded an opportunity to work in the medical records department. This is a job that is truly undervalued. You have to know HIPAA rules and guidelines to be able to provide customers and clients with the appropriate information. You must be very detailed oriented.

What I wish was different

The only I wish that had been different is actually getting some real hands on training instead of shadowing people. I know the health information profession is very sensitive when it comes to privacy, security and confidentiality. Hands on training/experience will help build your skills and knowledge base and give you an opportunity of becoming employed.

Advice

I love learning about how the role of the medical records department plays an integral part of the health information profession. This experience was rewarding and I am most appreciative of Henry Ford Health System selecting me as a candidate for an externship within their HIT department.

What I wish was different

I just wish student interns got paid a little more.

Advice

If there is one thing I learned, it’s that one should really know how to utilize Excel. It will help with any project you have.

Associate Management Engineer

May 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed an opportunity to improve my engineering skills learned in the classroom by applying them in the real world. It was also a nice change from automotive work, which seems to provide most internship opportunities locally. Specifically, I appreciated the opportunity to apply problem solving and analytical skills as I worked to improve processes within the health system.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have had the opportunity to explore work within other departments and collaborate on a project with other interns.

Advice

When it comes to internships, you are largely responsible for your own success and experience. Work hard and keep yourself interested by requesting to be involved in projects that excite you, even if the involvement is limited.
