Resident Safety Representative

August - September 2019 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

This was one of my first jobs in my life and i absolutely loved it. There is flexible hours and days to choose from and its really simple and easy work once you get used to it. My peers and fellow assistants were really kind to help me out with this job and i can't wait to work over this winter.

What I wish was different

The only thing i wish was different is the pay rate. The pay rate, if working from either 8 am-8 pm, was $9.50 per hour. This is below new york state wage law which is really frustrating. The pay rate is the only thing that should be changed.

Advice

One piece of advice would be that you might be nervous during first few shifts because you don't know what to expect, but think this job as earning free money. It's simple, not hard at all (especially over the breaks), you get to choose your hours. So, being patient and calm is the way to go.

Student Aid/ Advising Intern

May - August 2019 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

I’m a commuter student so I liked be able to get more involved with the University as a whole. I also really only get to meet people from my program so it was nice to be able to get to know a wider group of people. With Advising I helped register all of the freshmen from my program so it was nice being able to meet and get to know almost all of them.

What I wish was different

I just wish that I took more time off than I did. I was told if I give notice I could take off whenever I wanted. The other student aids would take over a week off when I only took maybe 2 days over the whole summer. I just started to get a little burnt out by the end of it because it felt like I didn’t really get a summer break.

Advice

Bring your chargers because there is a lot of down time.

Orientation Leader

May - September 2018 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

I loved the energy of the staff. It was an experience I will never forget. This job taught me a lot about myself, and it also allowed me to grow in ways that I never knew possible!

What I wish was different

There were moments when some weeks were harder than others. Programming was confusing because this was Orientation's first year doing something different, so it took a lot of adapting to.

Advice

If you want this job, be prepared to give you 110% every day. This job is the second most applied for job on campus, and the people the choose are the students that OSLE believes are the leaders that can help shape, inform, and support the incoming class of freshman. If you just want this job so it can boost your resume, and put you further in life, then this isn't for you.

Pride Guide

June - August 2018 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

I liked the fact that by the end of the job, I was able to address large groups of people and keep their attention without stuttering. I was also able to make families comfortable while they waited to be helped by making small conversation.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more tour training. I felt at times like I was a little unprepared, even with the script that we were given. I think there needed to be a more intense training process for summer hires.

Advice

Practice presenting on your days off! It will help make it easier and instinctive to present without constantly stopping and thinking about what you're going to talk about.

Research assistant

July - August 2018 • Hofstra University, NY

What I liked

I was fortunate to be mentored by a great engineer. Dr.Miranda taught me a lot and gave me various involved engineering tasks. I had the opportunity to master several computer programs such as Matlab, AutoCAD, Artemis Modal, and Mastan2 and learn more about the dynamics of structures. This experience was a great opportunity to prove myself as an engineer and made me want to conduct my own research.

What I wish was different

I wish that this research assistantship lasted longer as I could not finish the project by the end of the 10 weeks. However, I turned it into a senior thesis so that I can a chance to finish the research.

Advice

Don't be afraid of the workload, don't see a project as deliverables and deadlines; instead, let yourself be driven by the excitement of accomplishing it.
