Hospital for Special Surgery

research assistant

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I love the environment and how supported the HSS community is towards all the researcher, scientists, and staffs. During this internship, I have the opportunity to conduct research to test for difference in gene expression of M2 macrophage polarization when treated between IL-4 and Dexamethasone. Some of the skills I gained are Reverse Transcription to convert RNA template to cDNA, capable of analyzing gene expression data using qPCR, and RNA extraction.

What I wish was different

I wish the duration of the internship was a little bit longer so I can perform some future aims I have for my research.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about my experience during my time at HSS is that don't be hesitate to ask for help and support. This also applies to any other types of internship/experiential learning experience since the whole point of internship is for you to gain more skills/knowledge regarding your field.

What I liked

How supportive the staff was, the ability to shadow many different health care professionals, and the independence to design my own internship experience

What I wish was different

I wish I knew ahead of time exactly how much flexibility there would be in terms of choosing who I would shadow and when because coordinating with other interns was difficult.

Advice

Be ready to take initiative. If there's something you really enjoy doing one day ask to see if there is any way to get more involved.
