What I liked

Working for iFixit was a very positive experience. I enjoyed knowing that I was part of a group of people that were trying to make a difference and insight real change in the world. This made my work meaningful, and inspired me to become passionate about self-repair and the Right to Repair movement in my own time. Aside from this, everyone was incredibly nice, supportive, and helpful. The community at iFixit was very welcoming, and everything felt very organized, even in a virtual setting.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to experience the iFixit office, company lunches, and the overall iFixit atmosphere in real life. This wasn't possible because of COVID-19, and, of course, there's nothing iFixit could have done about this. I honestly can't think of anything else I would change. My experience was fantastic, and I was sad to leave.

What I liked

iFixit is made up of a wonderful team of people who are incredibly supportive and friendly. iFixit does a lot of advocacy regarding sustainability, e-waste, and repairability. It is very fulfilling to work for a company that seeks to make a difference in the world. iFixit holds bi-weekly company-wide meetings where all employees (from the U.S. and Germany) get together to talk about company updates, which was a wonderful way to really make the company feel like one big family.

What I wish was different

I worked virtually during the summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I did not get the full experience of working at iFixit. Generally, iFixit holds lunches on certain days of the week where everyone in the office eats together, and I wish I had been able to have that experience.

Advice

iFixit does not hire people who do not know how to write and communicate effectively. Brush up on your spelling and grammar skills before completing an interview with iFixit.

What I liked

From the open and accepting culture to the engaging work environment, iFixit is an attractive company for anybody to work for. iFixit is home to many unique individuals and despite the differences in personalities, every employee firmly believes in the mission of the company—to provide free and accessible repair information for the world and to teach everybody how to fix everything. In addition to the great work environment, iFixit leadership is very supportive and aims to set their employees up for success including insurance and other benefits. Oh and the in-house lunches served on Tuesdays and Thursdays are the cherry-on-top.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish had been different would be the new employee orientation. Although iFixit has a great work culture and environment, it took me a little while to adjust and get used to it mainly because I didn't have as many opportunities due to working part-time.

Advice

iFixit is a great company to work for. If you're looking to join an accepting, ambitious, and hard-working team who believes in providing free and accessible repair information to everybody in the world, look no further.

EDU Aide

February 2017 - August 2019 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

The flexibility and atmosphere. Our small team had very flexible scheduling and great communication. We worked with each other to make sure that we were advancing our company's goals, but also made sure we were all taken care of and happy with our work-life balance.

What I wish was different

Higher pay. The job title does little to describe the amount of work we did and the diverse set of skills required to effectively complete our tasks. The area is extremely expensive to live in, and wages were not necessarily competitive for similar work elsewhere in the state.

Advice

Don't be afraid to negotiate for higher pay (and turn down an offer that's too low), because it's harder to get raises at any job once you agree to a lower amount than you're comfortable with.
