What I liked

I really liked the opportunity to see and work in another part of the country, while gaining food service and nutrition experience. I was able to meet a lot of different types of people and work alongside international students. I was reimbursed for travel, and provided with housing and food while at camp. I got the opportunity to work with two RDs and learned so much from them. I also got a ServSafe manager and allergen certification.

What I wish was different

I wish we had gotten a little more off time to be able to see more of the part of the country we were in and rest. The hours are long and it can get frustrating and tiring after a while of working and being around the same people.

Advice

Be prepared to work long hours (50-60 hours per week) and go some days without a break. It can be mentally challenging, but it's also a very rewarding feeling when a kid compliments and appreciates the meal and hard work you are putting in. Take advantage of the time you have in a different part of the country and make good connections with the people there. Lastly, you need to be flexible because there will always be surprises and challenges that arise that you didn't plan for.
