Kansas State University - Talent Acquisition Team

assistant coordinator

September 2020 - August 2021 • Manhattan, KS

What I liked

Working with students, serving the community, and learning communications skills I am able to take to any other job in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish I could stay in the position longer, but would not trade my educational journey for it.

Advice

Be flexible, the job changed from day to day and that was the best part of the job because working during the time of covid, that is all anyone could ask for.

Graphic Design Intern

October 2019 - March 2020 • Manhattan, KS

What I liked

I enjoyed working in a small office space where I was given autonomy while having plenty of support from the team. The cultivation of my skills and creativity was well facilitated here.

What I wish was different

I think a more effective client correspondence technique could have been used, but it got the job done.

Advice

You get out what you put in, it's important that you're proactive in your development with a position like this.

Wildlife Technician

June - August 2020 • Manhattan, KS

What I liked

I was able to travel all over Kansas and learn the scientific names of many species of mammal. I went places I never would have gone had I not had this job. I was able to work with graduate and undergraduate students and formed great friendships for the months I was working with them.

What I wish was different

I wish that we did not have to camp the entire time and maybe had field houses that we could stay at but some of the locations were fairly remote so that wouldn't be possible. I wish that we had been able to get paid more than $10 an hour because we were only able to put in 40hrs a week even though when working in the field we definitely put in overtime.

Advice

If you do not like camping catching small mammals in the field is not for you. In some places there's no bathrooms. The work is summer work and there's no AC and you probably won't be able to shower for a week or more at a time. If you decide to try out some work like this make an effort to appreciate the places you get to see because that is what is going to stick with you when it's all over.
