Capital Projects Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Longview, WA

What I liked

I received Project Management experience where I had the opportunity to manage contractors, oversee projects, coordinate with several different departments at the Mill as well as with the contractor supervisors. I also was able to design equipment modifications which required communication with operators, supervisors, and vendors. As interns we had the opportunity to perform tasks that our full time counterparts did on a daily basis. We also had several team building events such as rafting trips, lunches, and dinners.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to stay several more months due to the fact that the Mill is a large, complicated place and it took 3 months just to get comfortable with the areas I was working in. However, being there longer would have allowed me to learn more and be able to apply the knowledge I had gained over the past 3 months more efficiently.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. Everyone is happy to help and walk you through whatever you need. It is no secret there that the processes and systems take a long time to get to know.
